The Australian Market

MELBOURNE, VICTORIA

The Superannuation (pension) market in Australia is one of the world’s largest and fastest growing asset pools, currently comprising of AUD$3.9tn, forecast to grow up to AUD$9tn by 2041.

Today’s superannuation system was introduced in 1991 and is a federally legislated mandatory scheme through which a minimum of 11.5% of working Australians’ annual wages are contributed to a retirement savings plan. This level of contribution is scheduled to increase to 12% over time. Superannuation savings are managed by Industry, Public, Retail, Corporate and Self Managed Superannuation Funds.

Australia’s addressable marketplace is concentrated due to the current consolidation of multiple Superannuation Funds. These Funds are some of the largest globally and are motivated to develop long term partnerships with asset managers.

In addition, Australia has various other large institutions, including its sovereign wealth fund, banks, insurance company schemes and Family Offices.
